It is not your fault

The biggest thing that I can tell you if you find yourself the victim of revenge porn is that IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.

I often shake my head when I read comments about victims of revenge porn. For example - "People who send nude photos deserve their photos to be on the internet" was only one of the cringe-worthy horrifying comments I've read among hundreds.

To see people bash the victims of revenge porn instead of holding the low life character accountable who would post the nude photo(s) or video of someone unsuspecting is beyond me.

Victim blaming is just as bad as the despicable person who posted the nude photo(s) or video in the first place.

Revenge porn is NOT the only crime that many people pass judgement on. If you often read the news - you'll see a number of negative opinions.

We can get the victim blame left, right, front and back by people we know and people we don't know but at the end of the day it's still your truth.

Nobody knows your story except for you.
Nobody has walked in your own shoes except for you.

You don't need to accept anyone's judgement on something they have not lived.

What happened to you is not your fault.

Stay on top of the maliciousness

For victims of revenge porn - you can set up a Google alert on your name, etc if the photo(s), personal information and more so that you are notified when it has made its way onto another website.

Google Alert: https://www.google.com/alerts

Make sure to preserve evidence by taking screenshots, printing out the webpage(s) and I'd even gone as far as taking photos in the search engines to prove how high these types of links show up.

Report the nude photo(s) or video to the website, report to authorities, speak to a lawyer who is knowledgeable about revenge porn to find out ways to fight back and above most - please take care of yourself.

Reporting the Post of Nude Photos or Video

You will want to report the nude photo(s) or video that someone has posted of you to get them removed from the website. It is a very distressing process and have shared some links below to help you.

Here are some quick links that can help you request that the nude photo(s) or video be removed from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google, Instagram, Yahoo, YouTube, Reddit, Microsoft and more.

What do I do if someone posts nude photos of me online?

There are many things you will need to do to try and undo what someone else has done.

You will be highly emotional if you find nude photos of yourself online or someone has notified you that there are photos of you on a malicious website. Through your tears - you must, MUST take a screenshot, snap a photo, something that will serve as evidence or all of the above. Your friends or the person who notified you might have already taken a screenshot but it's always good to build your own evidence.

Capture the website url, the date and time it was posted, which is usually at the top of those kinds of posts anyways.

The malicious person who has done the posting can sometimes un-post the nude photos but it's already too late because the internet moves fast. You want to make sure that you have evidence for the authorities and any future lawyer(s) if you plan to pursue legal action.

Please call the police. There is the Canadian C-13 bill that has come into effect as of March 2016. Be prepared to show the police what you have found.

You might already know who has posted your nude photo(s) on the internet. IF there had been a threat from this person to post nude photos online - this should have already been told to the authorities.

If you had not already shared this with the authorities previous to the revenge porn post - share it with the police along with proof of the threat (if you have) such as a text message, an email, a voice mail message, etc.

I cannot guarantee what will happen but in my experience - the police took a lengthy statement and a criminal investigation launched after the new C-13 bill came into effect.

Manitobans can sue revenge porn poster

Manitoba has a new Intimate Image Protection Act that came into effect in January 2016, which will enable Manitobans "to sue perpetrators in civil court if they share or if they threaten to share intimate images without consent."

Please learn more about C-13 and the new Intimate Image Protection act above if you reside in Manitoba. Nobody deserves to have their body posted onto the internet. Fight back with legal knowledge. My hope is that more women step forward and fight for justice.

Let's call it what it is - Revenge Porn

In March, 2015 - Bill C-13 came into effect. It's known as Protecting Canadians from Online Crime.

....."162.1 (1) Everyone who knowingly publishes, distributes, transmits, sells, makes available or advertises an intimate image of a person knowing that the person depicted in the image did not give their consent to that conduct, or being reckless as to whether or not that person gave their consent to that conduct, is guilty....."

If you're the victim of someone posting up nude photos of you without your consent - please educate yourself about Bill C-13 because they might have just committed a criminal offence.

This new C-13 bill will start holding these abusive characters criminally responsible for thinking they have the right to exploit someone's body online while they themselves are hiding behind a screen.
